The attorney for a Texas immigration lawyer said Thursday he was deported to Guatemala after returning to the United States for the first time in more than five years.
Jose Manuel González, a Mexican citizen, said in a written statement he was arrested at San Francisco International Airport on Aug. 1.
He said he was not allowed to speak with family members, as the immigration system was in “excellent condition.”
Gonzáles attorney, Jose Manuel Pineda, said he is “not surprised” that he was detained at the airport and questioned about his immigration status.
Pineda said Gonzáls lawyer has been in contact with U.N. officials, who are “very upset” about his case.
The lawyer, who was in Mexico, was arrested in Mexico City on Thursday.
Pressed for comment, the U of T said Gonzáses lawyer had not received any notice from the U, and that the attorney had not been given a copy of the detention order.
