The federal government has put the cost of buying a home at $1,000 per month for a family of four and $1.2 million for a single person, according to a report from the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office.
The average cost of a home in California is $2.8 million, and the average price in Florida is $3.5 million.
The GAO found that the average home purchase in the United States is now about $50,000, which is up from $41,000 in 2010.
The report found that a family that would have paid $2,500 a month for their home would now have $4,000.
The numbers come as the United Nations announced a $50 billion plan to invest in infrastructure to help countries like Canada and Mexico build more homes and apartments.
In January, the government announced that it would provide $10 billion to build new homes and expand existing ones.
The goal is to provide 3.5m housing units over the next decade.
